Igbinedion University, Okada, has entered a partnership with EduTech Global that could do more than move lectures from classrooms to computer screens. If properly executed, the agreement could give the private university a scalable digital education platform, widen access to higher education and provide Nigerian students with skills that are increasingly demanded by employers.
The partnership comes as Nigerian universities face two connected pressures: growing demand for tertiary education and a labour market that increasingly rewards digital competence. EduTech Global will provide digital learning infrastructure and technology support for Igbinedion University’s Distance Learning Centre, allowing students to access academic programmes outside the conventional campus environment.
The more important question is therefore not whether Igbinedion can put its courses online. It is whether the partnership can create a better education system that produces graduates who are more employable, more adaptable and capable of participating in Nigeria’s expanding digital economy.
The Immediate Benefit: Access Without Relocation
The first advantage is geographical.
A conventional university model requires students to live close enough to campus to attend lectures, complete administrative processes and sit examinations. That excludes workers, entrepreneurs, parents and young people who cannot afford relocation or full-time study.
Digital education reduces that constraint. Igbinedion can potentially reach students across Nigeria without building physical facilities in every location. The university can increase enrollment while using its existing academic resources more efficiently.
Prof. Lawrence Ezemonye, the vice-chancellor, said the partnership would help make “quality, industry-aligned education” available to learners regardless of location.
That proposition has commercial value. A student in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt or Kano does not need to relocate to Edo State to pursue an Igbinedion programme. A working professional can study around employment. An entrepreneur can acquire new qualifications without abandoning a business.
For the university, the potential gain is equally clear: a large addressable market.
Technology can Fix More than Distance
The partnership becomes more interesting because the university intends to digitise academic and administrative processes rather than simply upload lecture materials.
Prof. Gideon Bawa, director of the Distance Learning Centre, said the centre previously relied heavily on manual processes and expects the partnership to move most academic and administrative activities online.
That could produce meaningful efficiency gains.
A properly integrated platform can allow students to apply, enroll, pay fees, access course materials, submit assignments, communicate with lecturers, take assessments and monitor academic progress from one digital environment.
For university management, digital records can reduce paperwork and provide real-time information on enrollment, course participation, assessment performance and student retention.
The technology should also allow the university to identify students who are falling behind. Automated alerts can prompt academic advisers to intervene before a struggling student disappears from the programme.
This is where the economics of educational technology become important. The objective should be to serve more students without allowing educational quality to deteriorate as enrolment increases.
The Bigger Opportunity is Employability
Nigeria’s digital-skills shortage makes the partnership more consequential than a conventional distance-learning expansion.
The World Bank estimates that 230m jobs in sub-Saharan Africa could require digital skills by 2030. Its research on Nigeria identifies digital competence as an increasingly important requirement across the labour market.
For universities, this creates a direct responsibility. A degree delivered through technology is not enough. Students must leave with capabilities that employers can use.
Igbinedion could use its digital platform to combine degree programmes with short professional courses in data analytics, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, cloud computing, software development, digital marketing, financial technology and project management.
The university could also introduce industry projects in which students solve real business problems. Employers could contribute to course design, offer internships and assess final projects.
That would bring education closer to the labour market.
The approach is already gaining attention elsewhere in Nigeria. Ribara Analytica, for example, is using labour-market data to compare the skills employers demand with those taught by universities and to connect graduates with employers.
Igbinedion could adopt a similar philosophy internally by using employment data to review its programmes.
AI Could Make the Platform Smarter
Artificial intelligence offers another opportunity.
An AI-enabled learning platform could provide students with personalised practice materials, identify weaknesses and recommend additional resources. AI assistants could answer routine questions outside lecture hours, while lecturers could use analytics to identify topics that students consistently struggle to understand.
The university could also use AI to help students develop workplace skills through simulations. Business students could analyse fictional company accounts. Computer science students could work on coding problems. Medical and health students could use controlled digital simulations where appropriate.
But AI should support lecturers rather than replace them. Academic integrity, student privacy and assessment security will become more important as generative AI becomes easier to access.
The World Bank has recently argued that AI offers developing economies an opportunity to improve productivity and public services, but only where countries address weaknesses in infrastructure, electricity, internet access and digital skills.
That warning applies directly to Nigerian digital education.
Infrastructure will Decide the Outcome
A sophisticated online university cannot operate effectively on unreliable connectivity.
Students need affordable internet, electricity, smartphones or computers and platforms that function well under low-bandwidth conditions. Course materials should therefore be downloadable. Video content should have lower-bandwidth alternatives. Mobile applications should be treated as essential rather than optional.
This matters because digital exclusion can reproduce the inequality that online education is supposed to reduce.
Igbinedion and EduTech should therefore consider offline learning packages, compressed video, mobile-first course design, digital libraries and partnerships that reduce students’ data costs.

The Test is Outcomes, not Enrollment
The partnership should ultimately be judged by what happens after students enrol.
Igbinedion should publish data on completion rates, graduate employment, professional certifications, student satisfaction, employer feedback and earnings where possible. Those indicators would provide a stronger measure of success than the number of courses uploaded or students registered.
The university also needs to protect the value of its qualification. Digital delivery must retain rigorous admission standards, assessment procedures and academic oversight.
For EduTech Global, the challenge is equally demanding. Its technology must remain reliable, secure and easy to use. The platform should integrate the full student journey rather than create another disconnected digital service.

A Potential Model for Nigerian Universities
Igbinedion University’s partnership with EduTech Global arrives at an important point for Nigerian higher education. The country needs more university places, but it also needs graduates whose skills correspond with the jobs being created.
Digital education can address both problems if universities treat technology as part of the academic model rather than as an information-technology project.
The immediate benefit for Igbinedion is greater access and operational efficiency. The longer-term opportunity is much larger: a university that can recruit beyond its physical location, personalise learning, connect courses to employers and equip students for digital work.
That is where the partnership could become consequential.
Nigeria does not need more online lectures for their own sake. It needs education that is cheaper to access, easier to complete and more closely connected to employment. If Igbinedion University and EduTech Global can deliver that combination, their partnership could offer a practical model for how Nigerian universities can use technology to expand education while building the workforce required for the next phase of the economy.
