Job Description

Full/Part Time Status:

Negotiable

Position Description:

University of Iowa Stead Family Department of Pediatrics seeks a Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics (DBP) physician. Appointment rank is open and may be to either the tenure track or clinical (non-tenure) track consistent with clinical experience and research interest. Appointment rank to Instructor of Pediatrics (non-tenure or clinical track) may also be considered. The individual selected will join the Division of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics to provide patient care, teaching, and consultative services as developmental and behavioral specialist.

The Division is comprised of five faculty, 3 LIPs, and a DBP Fellow, and is a national leader in research, with NIH-funded grants, including the Hawkeye Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Center (Hawk-IDDRC), as well as industry-sponsored clinical research.  In the 2024-25 edition of “Best Children’s Hospitals,” U.S. News & World Report ranked our program as one of the top 50 hospitals for behavioral health. The Division works closely with the University of Iowa Center for Disabilities and Development (CDD), which has been Iowa’s University Center for Excellence on Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD) since 1972. The Center for Disabilities and Development integrates a broad array of clinical services in one location, including developmental and behavioral pediatrics, psychology, speech-language pathology, occupational and physical therapy, social work, education, audiology, and nursing, and thus provides an ideal environment for exceptional patient care, education and research. The Center is also the home of Iowa’s LEND (Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and related Disabilities) program and has provided outstanding interdisciplinary training in neurodevelopmental disabilities for over two decades.  This position includes important leadership opportunities, including DBP Fellowship Director and LEND program leadership.

Fellowship Director applicants would need to meet qualifications as specified by the ACGME (Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education). Responsibilities would include 1) designing and overseeing the 3-year curriculum, including clinical experiences, research opportunities, and mentorship; 2) ensuring the fellowship complies with ACGME requirements; 3) managing the recruitment and selection process for fellows, typically through ERAS and the NRMP matching program; and 4) ensuring timely evaluation of fellows’ clinical, teaching, and research skills.

The University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine is one of the nation’s top medical schools. It is ranked 44th in research by U.S. News & World Report. Stead Family Department of Pediatrics is ranked No. 27 in NIH funding among public pediatric departments nationwide by the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research.

The pediatrics department comprises the medical staff of University of Iowa Health Care Stead Family Children’s Hospital, Iowa’s only nationally ranked children’s hospital and home to the state’s only Level 4 NICU and Level 1 Regional Resource Pediatric Trauma Center. The ACGME-accredited pediatric residency program at Stead Family Children’s Hospital trains 50 pediatric resident physicians.

For its 2024-25 edition of “Best Children’s Hospitals,” U.S. News & World Report ranked Stead Family Children's Hospital in six pediatric specialties:  Neonatology, Pediatric and Adolescent Behavioral Health, Pediatric Cancer, Pediatric Diabetes and Endocrinology, Pediatric Nephrology and Pediatric Urology.

We are home to the Hawkeye Wave, voted the best college sports tradition by USA Today readers, where 70,000 football fans wave to our patients and providers every game day. You will never feel as much community support as you do at Iowa. Come wave with us!
